Tank Over Time

Pictures of my 20 gallon reef tank I set up at work. I will add more pictures as the tank progresses, so check back in once in a while. If you're really bored you can check out the Reef Tank Log I have been keeping about the tank, which describes when key events in the tank occurred, as well as the dates and results of water quality tests.

June 29th, 2006 - Empty tank (except for 16 gallons of water, two power heads, and the heater) with the lights off

June 29th, 2006 - Empty tank with both lights on

June 29th, 2006 - Empty tank with only the actinic light on

June 29th, 2006 - Clouded tank after adding the Indo-Pacific live sand -- it will probably remain clouded for several days

July 7th, 2006 - Sand after I finally stopped moving it around and let it settle

July 7th, 2006 - Close up of the sand... Kind of looks like crushed Oreos doesn't it?

July 10th, 2006 - Tank shortly after adding the 15 lbs of collectors grade base rock from Reefer Rocks

July 13th, 2006 - The tank with the live rock added -- I think I'm finally happy with how the rocks are laid out

July 13th, 2006 - Close up of rocks on the left side of the tank

July 13th, 2006 - Close up of rocks on the right side of the tank

July 13th, 2006 - Close up of my favorite rock in the tank -- it is completely hollow inside, perfect place for fish to hide in and it looks kind of like the Flintstone's house to me

August 4th, 2006 - There has been quite a bit of algae growth on the base rocks over the last month -- it is a fluorescent green color

October 20th, 2006 - The majority of the fluorescent green algae has died off and the rocks have regained a more natural color -- the tank is also starting to look more colorful with the addition of the Ricordeas in the middle

December 23rd, 2006 - With the addition of the Kenya Trees, Xenias, and more Ricordeas, the tank is really starting to look like a reef, but there is still a long ways to go

February 22nd, 2007 - Many new corals have been added as the direct result of my joining the Chesapeake Marine Aquaria Society (CMAS), including 3 or 4 colonies of zoanthids/palys, several new ricordeas, an acan lord, a favites, and a small birds nest

September 2nd, 2007 - The tank seems largely unchanged due to a small crash I experienced during the Memorial Day weekend (A/C failed, see the log) stunting the growth of my corals -- some of the major changes are the addition of the Sarcophyton on the bottom and several more LPS corals

January 25th, 2008 - As you can see in the picture most of the corals have recovered and started growing again, which is especially apparent in the ricordea garden -- the front of the tank has become pretty crowded so several corals, including the sarcophyton, have been moved to the back of the tank
